May 2026

You have to go away before you can come back, but we don't really do that anymore. We curate our undead internet fame at all times as if someone was paying attention, inverting the whole notion of scarcity, that fundament of economics.

NORTHEAST — After touring five weeks of a seven week stretch of February and March, I have just a handful of shows in the Northeast this spring, and those few spread out in a way that will interfere only minimally with fishing and writing . . .

March 2026

I drove a couple thousand miles through the desert and mountains, high plains and passes, places where the tent of the sky bellied down in vast folds of cloud and seemed to weight the mind. It rained once in Utah but I never did see any snow…

January 2026

I've been having trouble writing this thing. I mean, if we pulled on our boots and wrapped up in heavy jackets, drove down to the falls below town to walk the access road to the No. 2 dam, I'd have my opinions. . .

December 2025

In December I'll be on tour in upper Midwest on a special run of shows with the great Dave Moore , one of my all-time heroes and longtime friends. We'll start out together on a split bill, a two-night stand at lovely old Trempealeau Hotel just north of La Crosse, WI. . .

The plain fact is a grouse is a tougher wingshot than a pheasant. Especially in heavy cover, and especially hunting alone and without a dog. The reasons for this are several . . .

In the first part of October I'll be on tour in the Northeast in the quartet formation, on a run of shows that starts at the Oxbow in Portland, ME (10/2), and heads down to Passim in Cambridge, MA (10/3), back out to the Pioneer Valley for a show at the Iron Horse (10/4) . . .

July 2025

Last winter after our show at the James Theater in Iowa City we found ourselves with a night off between shows and rooms in town, so we went down to the old Fox Head Tavern, where important American writers have debauched themselves in historical ways for many years…

MONTANA – This week I'll start a solo tour of Montana with two nights at Live from the Divide in Bozeman (SOLD OUT/wait-list), and two nights up at the truly magical Home Ranch Bottoms in Polebridge (6/11-12) . . .

May 2025

I’ve driven my mother-in-law’s car to a parking lot in a small town on the coast in Massachusetts. The day is a gym sock, cloying and hot, with low, thin cloud . . .

In April we have a run of full-band shows in New England, starting at one of our favorite rooms, the Cock'n'Bull in Galway, NY (4/23), a massive old barn converted into a lovely restaurant . . .

February 2025

January mornings have looked like this, sitting by the stove in the dark, trying to bend my mind around one idea or another. I got a lot done in January but I'm not sure what it was.

January 2025

I took this picture out the window of a rented car twenty years ago. I was 29, on tour in the desert and making long solo drives across Arizona and New Mexico with a bad back, stopping for tacos in towns I'd never heard of…

The Universal Fire Solo Acoustic

Last summer while I was waiting around for The Universal Fire to come out, I re-recorded all the songs from the new album alone, playing everything myself. I worked mornings and evenings in my friend Maria's barn fronting a meadow and sheep pasture. . .

In college I took a course with Paul Boyer, History of American Thought, 1859-Present. Why 1859? That's when Darwin published On the Origin of Species, which I had read in high school to impress a girl…

September 2024

Here’s how it works: set your alarm for three but wake at two, details running through your mind like ticker tape. Kiss your half-sleeping wife, say a small prayer at the door to your daughter’s room, mute the buckle of your belt with your palm as you creep down the stairs . . .

The Universal Fire

THE UNIVERSAL FIRE is out today and streaming anywhere music is available, and I hope you’ll stream the hell out of it, buy it, and share it. I hope the songs will be company, and make you wonder, like I wonder, what we’re all doing and what any of it’s for, if not love.

August 2024

THE UNIVERSAL FIRE comes out this week, Friday (9/6), and that night I'll be on stage in the Northeast with the full band and I won't be sweating details or re-painting the internet billboard of my face. I'll be playing music with people I love, for people who decided to come hear us. How lucky.

Solo Modelo

FOR MOST OF A DECADE I spent about a hundred and twenty nights a year on the road with Billy Conway. When we were out duo he played a suitcase drum kit: a snare drum with a Remo conga head, a ride cymbal, a low-boy (sock cymbal) from the 1930’s, and an empty suitcase that carried all these things and served as the bass drum.

I took this picture down in Texas on tour with John Convertino this winter. Last night of the trip, wind blowing hard down the street in Marfa, the two of us standing outside the bar and maybe thirty souls inside, some of them just there to shoot pool.

WINTER 2024

Twenty-four years into the new century and I’ll turn forty-eight next week, having lived half my life in the old one. Half a life with the phone plugged into the wall and Code-a-Phone micro-cassettes piling up taped messages.
