(Whatever amount feels right)
Companion to the earlier full-band studio album, THE UNIVERSAL FIRE: SOLO ACOUSTIC RECORDINGS is an unplugged reimagining of the songs from The Universal Fire – “a meditation on the nature of beauty, mortality, and loss” (No Depression) – featuring Jeffrey Foucault alone on guitar, banjo, octave mandolin, bottleneck and lap slide, and piano, and including seven previously unreleased songs: Straightaway, High, I Miss (The Way It Used to Feel), If I Could Find It in My Heart, How Do You Know It’s Heaven (If It Never Ends), Someplace Left to Stand, and Sun Is Going Down.
Evoking the spare sonics and stripped-down intimacy of Jeffrey’s early albums, THE UNIVERSAL FIRE: SOLO ACOUSTIC RECORDINGS fleshes out both the song cycle and writing process, showing the recurrence of images and lines in new contexts, and rearranging the album sequence – the story told – around the new material, holding each song up to the light to find new colors.
Recorded alone in a refinished barn fronting a meadow and sheep pasture, with the windows open to late summer birdsong and the buzz of cicadas, the album takes a verité approach to create a snapshot of a journeyman artist turning inward, in a series of loose, candid performances.
